I have often stated privately that the difference between Christian and Muslim martyrs is the one dies for God, the other kills for him.

Same here. A martyr is one who let's himself be martyred, not someone who martyrs others; he who martyrs others would (logically & gramatically) be called a martyrer, not a martyr.
