A Rose, By Any Other Name...

...or a short history of Western Christian thought, from Shakespeare to Orwell:

Unlike their sinful Protestant and Orthodox counterparts, Catholics don't get a divorce... they get an annulment.

Unlike their unregenerate and totally-depraved Catholic and Orthodox counterparts, Protestants don't sin... they "backslide ".

Psalm 141:4 Incline not my heart to evil words; to make excuses in sins.

  1. A short, and somewhat inaccurate history. Protestants sin and do not generally claim otherwise (if they know their scriptures). Backsliding isn't just "sin", it's giving up on the grace of God - no longer seeking to get close to God, no longer repenting of the sins that pile up. The term "backslide" is Protestant, but the concept isn't restricted to Protestantism - a "lapsed" Catholic has similarly given up on the practice of the Christian faith.

Dishonest use of the annulment process to get a divorce is an abuse, and it'd be nice if it stopped. But, like many worse things, it's unlikely to stop before the utter vanquishing of sin and evil.
